CHAPTER ELEVEN

The next morning I got up early to fix breakfast for Brittany. It was a bad morning for her. What I mean by bad is that she would wake up some mornings expecting to see Deirdra. As soon as she walked in the kitchen, I could tell something wasn’t right.

“You okay, baby?”

“Yes.”

I sat her in my lap and started to braid her hair.

“Are you thinking about Mommy?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Do you miss Mommy?”

“Yes.” Brittany wiped her eyes.

“Aw, you wanna watch Mommy on television?”

“Yes!” Brittany shouted.

“Come on!” I picked her up and carried her into the den.

Before Deirdra died we had made a video for Brittany. We tried to make her look as healthy as possible. Deirdra was the leading actress and Johnny and I were costars. We had a ball. Whenever Brittany became sad, we played the video and she would feel much better.

“Feeling better, Brit?” I asked.

“Yes!” Brittany ran to me and I picked her up. “I want some pancakes!”

“Pancakes it is,” I said.

I finished making breakfast and waited for Johnny to get up. I didn’t know what I would say to him. How do you ask your husband if he’s cheating when all that you have is the word of a conniving little bitch? I wanted to block out everything. Gizelle, Johnny, everything! I wanted my life to be like it was twenty-four hours earlier. While I was thinking, the telephone rang. I was expecting Pam and Cynthia to stop by so that we could ride together to the photo shoot. I thought the call was from one of them, but it wasn’t.

“Hello.”

“Hello,” I said.

“Alicia?”

“Yes, who’s calling?”

“Gizelle.”

“Oh,” I said. “Hi.”

“Hey, I’m sorry about last night. We were drinking and I guess things got a little out of control.”

“Okay,” I said, but I was really thinking, whatever, bitch!

“I’m looking forward to the photo shoot today.”

“Me, too.”

“Good,” Gizelle said. “I, uh, I just want to say that I wasn’t quite sure about signing the contract until I dropped you off.”

“Why not?”

“Well, your company is new, and you know, it takes time for a company to establish a reputation. Having a reputation is everything in this business. But you showed me last night that you are willing to do what’s necessary for your company…and for me.”

“I see.”

“Now, if you keep me happy, I’ll make sure your PR firm becomes one of the most-sought-after firms in the business. Isn’t that what you want?”

“Of course.”

“Then we’re on the same page,” Gizelle said. “We are on the same page, aren’t we?”

“Yeah,” I said.

I hung up the telephone and sat at the table. I remembering asking the question, what the hell have I gotten myself into?

Pam and Cynthia came over and we were eating breakfast by the time Johnny came downstairs. Michael stopped by to pick up Johnny for golf. He and Pam got into a big fight over black men and black women. I was preoccupied with my own problems to be concerned with something as trivial as that.

Michael stormed out and Cynthia checked Pam for disrespecting Michael.
